Junior Professorship in Southeast European History, Giessen
The Faculty of History and Cultural Studies invites applications for a
Junior Professorship in Southeast European History
(salary grade W1; with tenure track option)
Reference is made to § 64 of the Hessisches Hochschulgesetz (HHG). Employment is
initially limited to a period of three years. In the case of a positive evaluation of
performance in research, teaching and academic self-management, this may be extended
by a further period of three years. A permanent tenure-track is also possible, conditional
upon the fulfilment of § 63 Section 4 of the HHG and a positive evaluation of the assistant
professorship. Employment prior to the assistant professorship should not have been
longer than six years, including the period of the doctorate (childcare leave or similar will
be taken into consideration according to § 47 of the Hochschulrahmengesetz - HRG).
Proficient knowledge of German is expected.
Candidates must have proven expertise across the broad field of Southeast European
history. Research interests focussed on the history of the Ottoman Empire and/or Turkish
history are highly desirable. The assistant professor is required to co-operate closely with
the Giessen Centre for Eastern European Studies (GiZo) and is expected to collaborate
with the International Graduate Centre for the Study of Culture (GCSC). It is also
desirable that he/she has a reflexive interest in and engagement with the question of
gender constructions in Southeast Europe. Furthermore, candidates should contribute
actively to the development of the Justus Liebig University, supporting it in its long-term
aim of becoming an internationally-recognised model university, delivering first-class
research in the social and life sciences.
Candidates are also expected to provide courses and teaching within the framework of
interdisciplinary BA and MA programmes and the BA and MA programmes in the history
department, as well as in various teacher training degree programmes.
The Justus Liebig University aims to employ more women in academic research. We
therefore particularly encourage female candidates to apply. The JLU is committed to
increasing the number of women employed and also aims to increase its faculty
leadership with individuals who have competence in dealing with gender and familyrelated
issues. The JLU aims to position itself as a family-friendly university and thus
applicants with children are partivularly welcomed. Applications from disabled people of
equal aptitude will be favoured.
Applications should be sent, along with the necessary documentation, including a CV and
proof of teaching qualifications, to the President of the Justus Liebig University
Giessen, Erwin-Stein-Gebäude, Goethestrasse 58, 35390 Giessen, Germany. They
should be submitted under the reference number 4-09/11. Applications must be received
by May 10th, 2011 at the latest. http://www.scholarshipandphd.blogspot.com/
Candidates are strongly recommended to refer to our webpage for employment and
application procedures at: http://www.uni-giessen.de/stellenmarkt/merkblatt.pdf
Please submit copies of your application documents only, as they cannot be returned
after the application procedure is completed.
